Gaana is most popular music streaming app: Report

NEW DELHI: Gaana has emerged as the most popular on-demand music streaming app among Indians who mainly prefer to listen to their music free, revealed a report.

Gaana (25%) was followed by Apple Music (20%), YouTube (20%) and Wynk (14%), according to data from CyberMedia Research (CMR). Gaana’s parent Times Internet is a part of the Times Group, which publishes The Times of India.

“Mobile is the key conduit for listening music, with music streaming apps now being preferred over YouTube. Music app preferences in India are dictated by the choice of songs available in music app library, with freemium apps dominating paid subscriptions,” said Prabhu Ram, head — Industry Intelligence Group (IIG) at CMR.

A majority of those surveyed by CMR indicated ‘free’ music as their key consideration while choosing a music streaming app. Other key factors include strength of the songs library (51%) and music app features (9%).

“Music consumption in India is undergoing a slow but gradual evolution. Digital music streaming has emerged as a mainstream channel for those on the move,” said Thomas George, country manager and SVP at CMR. Around 66% said they listened to music while in-transit.
Moreover, one in five people in the survey said they listen to music at home, while 14% said they listen to music during work breaks. Overall, people spend around 20% of their time listening to music.
When it came to Swedish music streaming company Spotify, which entered the Indian market recently, only half of those surveyed said they were aware of it. When asked further, 40% said they will give Spotify a try.
“As a new entrant, Spotify would have to look at ‘creative’ strategies to connect with Indians and India. Given the choices available in the market, and with competition from the likes of JioSaavn and Gaana, it would make it more difficult for Spotify to compete,” said Prabhu.
